If you are looking for an alternative to traditional office counseling, distance professional services, also known as online therapy, e-therapy, video-chat counseling, phone counseling, chat therapy and therapeutic email exchange may be right for you. The therapeutic process is similar, while the delivery system reflects our changing time and busy lives.
There are advantages and disadvantages of counseling. Therefore, there are advantages and disadvantages of engaging in distance professional services; online therapy, e-therapy, video-chat counseling, phone counseling, chat therapy and therapeutic email exchange. Examples to follow:
The advantages of distance professional services may include, but are not limited to, convenience to limit travel time to an office, accessibility to people in rural or remote areas, the ability to receive counseling in the privacy and comfort of your own space, the choice to use asynchronous (email) verses synchronous (video, chat, or phone) communication, and the opportunity to experience counseling to treat mental and emotional disorders where you can focus on your issues without adding unnecessary distractions.
The disadvantages of distance professional services may include, but are not limited to, technology malfunctions, insurance reimbursement denial, concerns about confidentiality (confidentiality will be compromised if client sends information to a third party), inability for the counselor to see client’s facial expressions if not video based, possible unsuitability for crisis situations and severe mental health disorders.
Please keep in mind that therapy is hard work with no guarantee of positive results. If changes occur they may happen quickly, or changes may take place over time. I consider everyone unique; therefore your counseling experience will be unique. With this in mind, you will determine which type of counseling (distance professional service) works best for you.
For your convenience, you may choose video-chat counseling, chat therapy, phone counseling, and/or therapeutic email exchange. The online communication is on a secure server, encrypted, and HIPPA compliant. See page on How to Get Started.
